Guy getting playful and intimate... never happened much before?

Well the biggest problem with liking friends is that you never know what's friendly behavior and what's hinting at something more. If he keeps an interest in you and keeps doing what he's been doing I'd give it your best bet that he likes you back, and if this turns out to be a one off sort of thing I wouldn't risk it. In the end, it's all up to you.
