I have no overhead lights-- help!?

The duplex I am moving into has no light fixtures in the living room. Since we are renting, installing one is not an option. Anyone have suggestions as to types of bulbs to use in our lamps to help things stay bright at nighttime? Or a lamp that will provide excellent light? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
