Why do some women continue to stay in abusive relationships?

I'm always hearing about cases where women are verbally and sometimes physically abused by their boyfriends or husbands. It's horrible, yes. But the most mind boggling part is how the women continue to stay in the abusive relationship. When asked "why?" They respond with a simple..."because I love him." What the hell? Why do some women do this to themselves?
