Do newer cars with automatic transmission need a on to be pushed to get it out of park and into reverse?

On my car, I have to press on the brake pedal AND push a on on the floor shift lever to get it out of park. Some cars, only the brake pedal needs to be pressed. Sounds like your car was modified to byp the shift lock.. You can find out by going slowly (< 3 mph) and shift into reverse to see what happens. No damage at that slow speed.
