Unsecured WirelessNetwork?

Hi ! I was wondering if a friends connects to a unsecured network that isnt theres, what are the worst things that can happen. Like can people see their files on the computer or know a persons email pword etc.? Thanks, oh and how do you know whether someone is doing those kind of things
